Alone in the Red Light
Patricia Arroyo
Neptune City, NJ
oil on canvas
20" x 34"
$2700
Women of the Red Light is part of an ongoing series of people, places and things that focuses on secluded moments in time.
Images of women have been a natural subject of interest in my work throughout my history of painting, sculpture and photography. The process has been about a continuous discovery into my life, the identification of other women and those identical moments where we all feel like vulnerable, isolated women waiting for change.
It carries me to a place that is silent, a place of contemplation and thought that commingles with my surroundings. The work itself becomes a waiting place for fantasy and memory.

1865, What Was It?
Gina Abelkop
San Francisco, CA
collage (wood, paper, glue, lace, glitter, paint, fabric)
12"x12"
$150
Quite suddenly she falls into sleep and finds herself stuck in the twilight-lit version of 1865, all bustles and brambles, sure of the coming moon. But the creatures creep in without her knowledge and soon it’s all nerve-wracklingly familiar; stuck in the uncanny between-light, she ekes out a system of survival

“Joelle series” stemmed largely from a fascination with the subject for her embodiment of all that is worrisome of our female youth. I am attempting to analyze such through a kind of documentary process where she is imposing a confrontation on the viewer. As I am certain she is aware of her influences in actuality she is aware of the viewer in these paintings. In turn, creating an awkwardness and confusion for the viewer in the role they’re supposed to play. As if she is turning the tables. Within the paintings playing with scale so that she feels larger than the frame of world she occupies.

Matching Face
Michelle Brusegaard
Minneapolis, MN
oil and marker on canvas
22" x 28"
$425
These pieces are from an exhibition inspired by a children’s toy made in the early 1980”s. “Fashion Plates” are a series of interchangeable plates that can be arranged and rearranged countless times to create different ensembles. A rubbing is made from the plates, and then colors and or/patterns added.
I found a large box of these at a rummage sale in May, and was immediately inspired by the plates themselves. They look like small, truncated compositions: a head here, some legs there. I began by trying to contextualize these compositions, placing them in environments and creating stories for them.
It seemed, though, that there was no real place for these figures. Their faces vapid and lifeless, it became apparent that they only existed in a world of fashion. I chose to highlight this idea by letting the patterns become them. Rather than fashion distinguishing them, in these pieces, fashion has rendered them indistinguishable.
I have always been fascinated with pattern and it’s ability to communicate. In these pieces, pattern is does not operate as an aside or an accessory; the pattern is speaking for the piece.

My work is largely narrative; a sort of visual diary where internal and external realities are inseparably intertwined. The images I photograph are a reflection of all that I am fascinated and preoccupied with, on conscious and sub-conscious levels of awareness. My intent is to show the viewer "snippets" of a woman’s world. My purpose is to create a unique visual experience that will engage the viewer while evoking emotions.

Generally, my work refers to the aesthetics of craft vs. technology married with the high/low culture dynamic. Specifically, this painting is a collapse of 3 appropriated images of women upon each other – sourced from high and low art (although all reasonably well known). Each original image representes woman objectified , idealized and, and through cultural history, transformed into icons of different cultural strata. They coexist in the painting, mingling and moving through time and meaning. All the same, the elusiveness of the images is intended to pique investigation in the painting’s audience, in the image and hopefully, its meaning.

That the mouth is feminine speaks to the stereotypical ‘nagging-woman’ fears of the male, and the zipper speaks to the also typical response of the male wish to ‘fix-it.’ In other words, my piece is a guy thing. Taste's bitter on those female taste-buds, doesn't it?

Most simply stated, my work explores the meanings associated with the language that we use and the implications of these meanings. I appropriate visual and textual elements from all areas of visual culture in order to establish cross-cultural connections and renegotiate meanings, Object-ion depicts my most recent method of art-making, through which I seek to acknowledge and involve the viewer more directly. It is installation-al and interactive, allowing the viewer the opportunity to participate in the process of creating meaning and renegotiating our habits.

The ideal woman in history is another figure in mythology: Venus. She has impossible standards placed on her that no one fit into. On the final page, this is reflected in how the statue mimics the Venus de Milo. The statue is a representation of beauty today, despite the arms breaking off over time. In this situation though, the idealism of beauty is contrasted by the fact that she is rendered helpless to further possible mutilations with the lack of arms to defend herself. She is passive and now rendered as just a body. She is now subjected to the whims of Pygmalion.

The Juicing of A Woman's Voice
Louis Hebert
pen and ink illustration

The Juicing of a Woman’s voice stands as a testament to the countless women in this world that are still not free to speak their minds. We must never forget that the struggle is not over until we can all have our voices heard.
Louis Hebert is an American artist currently living in Kuwait, where he teaches western art at an Islamic private high school. The original illustration is part of the Jaynie Burnell private collection.

Sense of Awareness
Toni Hobbs
Morehead, KY
gouache, ink and spray paint on particle board
1' x 4'
$1200
Honesty is key. My pieces incorporate repetitive spirals and fast/fluid black ink lines, paint spatters and reticulation of thinned paint, or ink. Often, they don’t fill the entire surface. This loose boundary tends to be very symbolic of my own controlled chaos.
I have found particle board to also be an excellent canvas for my art as it is seemingly common and has many other uses. I enjoy the stability of the material and the fact that spray paint works well with it. I use spray paint -- as it forces my water-based ink and paint to be used carefully and deliberately. This constant repulsion and attraction is a delicate balance, much like life and it is an important factor in the art I create.

Study for #3
Aileen R. Imperatrice
Fresno, CA
oil, china marker, oil pastel on canvas
$900
As a woman, I am faced with the choice between what is expected of me and what I chose to be. Born to be an artist, I have chosen to express my life experience through my paintings. The ability to merge these realities gives me a foundation for my work and a connection to my subconscious.
“study for #3” comes from the value of willingness to try; stepping outside of my comfort zone where the self doubt still remains, and finding moments of bliss, and “together/apart “ exposes the struggle of relationships both chosen and familial; we are bound together but exist with different views.

Self Portrait as Von Stuck's Salome (sans head)
Sara Renae Jones
Chicago, IL
mixed-media/ painting/ collage
11 ½ x 13 ½ x 1 ½
$1000
I am interested in emblematic and allegorical self-portraiture of an emotionally intimate nature.
My work concerns...
An emotion, a memory, a personal story, a thought, a fear, a sickness, an occurrence or tragedy, a passion...a precise point in my life, the future, the past...pain, a fallacy, a truth, an adaptation of an image or theory that somehow struck me, something that, however insubstantial, I was taken with, a pointed or defined idea, a developed hate, a distinct love, something that I did...something that was done to me, a sacrifice, a heightened hope, an obsession, remorse, regret.
Survival, loss, change...the inexplicable struggle.
To purge myself and to express while eradicating personal traumas and anxieties from my being is the purpose and reason for my art. An attempt to re-create an internal sentiment is what it’s about for me. My images serve as protection devices that allow me to analyze my own experiences and emotions. If I am able to project and capture the constantly changing impression of an idea that I have in my mind into/onto something tangible it allows me to experience the matter in its full spectrum.
To be able to objectively analyze something that is completely subjective in its nature is the goal and driving purpose behind what motivates me and fuels my work.

Self taught in the arts, I have been engaging in some form of art/expression since I can remember.
I claim my inspiration from pure emotions; powerful and oftentimes personal, ranging from love, anger, betrayal and the scores in-between. I feel honoring the human soul, spirit and determination wholeheartedly breathes life into my creations and my hope is that the images and expressions fuel the desire for life and walk a path of their own through each of my viewer's interpretations.
I feel that as I continue to evolve and explore the human spirit with flights and pursuits I gain new ground in my motivation to create my own world. I spend a majority of my time continuing my mostly self-taught artistic endeavors and maintaining and growing in skills, not only with my artist brush, but through my need to express my life and feelings though music, performance, design and writing.

This Body
Heather Korich
Stillwater, MN
$5000
this body. the outer shell, the surface between me and the world. the constant struggle to assimilate, to conform, and to be what you are supposed to be. stereotypical. superficial. woman means something. qualities, characteristics that you are supposed to have. yet it is cracked, inadequate. it is only the surface. skin deep.
and below the surface? identity. yeah, but what is that anyway? is there a real core identity to anyone? are we all different, or do we just want to believe that each of us is unique and individual? the struggle, always trying to be what is expected. and yet, still searching. struggling for answers. trying to find
a way to break through this surface and let the identity underneath show through. but what identity? do you ever figure it out? if you constantly try to conform, even a little, and try to be what everyone else needs, what room is left for the truth? is there a truth? is there a truth? a true me, the inside? who am i?
hell, who is anyone? we all play roles. each of us act differently for different people. for all, for everyone. each of them get a side of you that they need, or that they expect. with all of this confusion on the surface, how are you ever supposed to find out who you are? what is real anyway?
and yet, this pristine, perfect surface. the cracks will begin to show eventually. you can’t hide forever. but wait. smile, someone is watching… looking. reading. do I pass? do you approve? just try to remember that i am more that just what you see. this is only the surface. the outer shell, this body.

Confidence, To Face Self With Courage
Sun-Don Lee
Beverly Hills, CA
oil on canvas
48.4"x58.3"
$45,540
As the Third Patriarch of the Buddhist Forshang, I create artwork for only one purpose: to bring awareness to the self-existence of Buddhahood. That is, every sentient being possesses the nature to become a Buddha, whether male or female. Here to portray a woman in the nude is by no means to objectify femininity but to use nude as a metaphor for the original purity of Buddhahood—the state of ultimate liberation that is free from any attachment. To achieve liberation, therefore, we need the courage to face and deconstruct the attachments that delude our true understanding of the reality—our desires, emotions, and taken-for-granted conceptions (e.g., the social biases against women)—and have the confidence in our very innate Buddhahood, regardless of our gender.

Abstractions, self-awareness, identity, therapeutic backlash and obsession are some of the many words I use to describe the inspiration behind my works creative foundation. As an artist, I am exploring mediums and ideas that have appealed to me in the past. For years Acrylic paint has been my primary medium, but I am now branching out to washes, ink, sculpture, and even the computer as an element in my art.
Recently, I have been inspired by a continuing studies course at MCAD to pursue a particular theme in my work – the use of retail signs of common and uncommon store-fronts to communicate the disgust and fascination I feel towards our culture’s obsession with consumerism.

pinhole camera digital print

$750 (lmtd edition prints)
I use the distortions of the oatmeal box pinhole camera and the digital
colorizations to create a series of visceral images that probe the unconscious,
stepping away from the literal reality and choosing instead to speak with a
Jungian expressionism. Objects or places juxtaposed with the model trigger a
response that I react to while colorizing. Through successive pulling of curves
B&W values are replaced with color in separate channels that ultimately
connect with the dreamlike state of the finished image. This imagery, rooted in 16th Century pinhole optics, juxtaposed with 21st Century digital print manipulations, is a hybrid of Photography and Printmaking.

Organizaciones democraticas from the series Off The Map: You Are Here

Helsinki, Finland
Digital photo collage with mixed media elements incorporated during the process
(oil pastel, gouache, pen, colormarker, tassels, scratching, crumpling etc.)
22.14" x 29.52 "
$1800
Organizaciones Democraticas is part of the Usted está aqui - Rari' nga nuulu' - You Are Here series (the title of the series in Spanish, Zapotec and English). The photographs and other materials used in the project are from Oaxaca Mexico. The project was started during an artist-in-residence stay there. The multilayered project deals with the role of women in society. It attempts to twist the role from victimized object into empowered subject. The project exams the ways women are seen and portrayed (by men). The aim also is to bring up various, unexplainable, even sometimes mysterious incidents in life that can unexpectedly happen to any woman anywhere reflecting the fragile and absurd nature of life.

“One woman in eight who lives to age 85 will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.”
-National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.
I am a survivor. On Valentine’s Day in 1995 I had a bi-lateral radical mastectomy. Why radical? I wanted the cancer out, now!
For a long time, it was difficult to look at myself in a mirror. One day I accepted that these are my battle scars and I had earned them.
Battling with cancer changes a person.
Before surgery I would take a long time getting to know people. Sometimes, so much time, that I never did get to know them. After surgery, I realized that my time might be very short and I didn’t have the time to wait or to be shy.
I have learned to make decisions and make them fairly quickly.
My goal is to live one day at a time.
Why this body of work? To heal…and to share with others who have been on the same journey.
10% of my proceeds on the sale of "One in Eight" sculptures will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

I am an artist from New Orleans and I entered this competition as a professional. As a woman, though, I am also the ultimate bitter fruit.
The most offensive men I have ever met in my entire life (and that's saying a lot) are from Minneapolis. So, yes, I am a BITTER FRUIT.
The synchronicity, fortuity, serendipity...whatever you want to call it...was too perfect for me not to enter this competition.
The ladies in my paintings know better than to show expression to anyone.

This piece deals with women’s objectified roles in our society. It is made in the format of a vintage fortuneteller arcade game. Traditionally, once women are beyond the age of the ingénue or the romantic, they assume the role of the crone or wise-woman. The woman’s face is peering from behind a facade. Half of her face is painted realistically and half in an expressionistic style reminiscent of a geisha or a china doll. Her face is framed in ruched satin. Does the fabric represent a shroud or a prom dress? The coin slot on the front of the piece alludes to the “pay-for-performance” nature of so many of the roles that we have traditionally filled.

Digital Media on Paper

Digital technology has changed us dramatically over the last decade. We do things faster, better and ways unthinkable by individuals from previous generations. With photographic computer manipulation software, endless combinations of effects and filters can be applied to an original image. But many of these combinations are just blind alleys that make no coherent sense. We can do many tricks, but often we end up with too little. I needed a guide where form follows feeling and I found Japanese woodblock print masters as my guides. Japanese woodblocks capture the control, precision, and clarity of the period landscapes and natural forms. I follow the Japanese woodblock path to make my photographic message stronger and clearer.
Simplicity and form: Taking photographic images and stripping out the nonessential. Photography is transcription art form that records everything that is in front of the lens. It’s too much information, coming from all possible angles, at too great a speed. The way we live right now is similar with 24 hour news reports and mobile phones, video streaming and impossible emails that demand personal attention. Basically what I did a few years ago was to shut down. I need a more intimate impression of the world, a more stripped down version.
“You can have anything you want, but you can’t have every thing.” I filter the world, getting more small, more snug, with a more personal thoroughness of a more narrow view of the world.

Like many artists, I have always been fascinated with the human, and in particular the female, form. My work has found its voice in the depiction and portraiture of women, often mothers and their families, with an emphasis on their humanity and spirituality. I am inspired by the artists Mary Cassatt and Kaethe Kolwitz, and like Cassatt and Kolwitz, I have gravitated in the subjects of my painting toward women and children. Alice Neel and her powerful depiction of her subjects, their misery, tragedy, and humanity, has captivated me. As well as her depiction of mothers and their children, demonstrating that motherhood is a valid part of the contemporary feminine experience and an important subject to paint.
From a realistic observation of my subjects, I try to distill the essence of the portrait, without duplicating the person’s features. Instead, I study, draw, and paint the same faces over and over again, until I know them. Knowing my subject does not depend on psychological insights. Like Edward Hopper or Winslow Homer, I reject the analytical in favor of the intuitive in order to arrive at a simple but definitive statement of people as they are. Like Hopper, Homer, and Jan Vermeer, I try to evoke a mood or feeling that the viewer can readily identify because it resonates within the scene.

Paivi Paakinaho

Photography digital C-print
30cm x 40cm
$450 each (edition of 5)
Objects are a representation of value systems projected onto them. This is very evident in the beauty industry where a single makeup object is made to represent all the qualities of a “perfect person”, most often of a perfect woman, both externally and also in a more abstract way: in the personality of an individual of which ones appearance is supposed to be a synonymous representation of.
By isolating these objects and presenting them as portraits I wish to look at them as individual products. What are the values that have been sold alongside these objects and what value systems do they appear to represent when placed in this alternative context.

My recent work creates a convergence between our technology heavy culture and the traditional cannons of oil painting. My work involves appropriating digital imagery and removing the image multiple times from its original context. In creating these paintings I hope to juxtapose the richness of oil painting with the intangibility of digital imagery. My most recent project sequesters imagery from trends in pop-culture including social networking communities. I am interested in appropriation, parody and recontextualization and how these themes attribute to methods of portraiture and question contemporary culture.

Andromeda
Sabina Păuţa Pieslak
New York, NY
watercolor
22" x 30"
$4550
The paintings of Romanian-American artist, Sabina Păuţa Pieslak, explore themes of dynamic change and transformation. Her nontraditional approach to watercolor challenges common conceptions of the medium and conveys energetic movement from one state of being to another, from one shape and time to another. Through vibrant colors and fluid textures, Sabina seeks to bring awareness to cycles of renewal that shape human consciousness, in life, history, and personal psychology. From the artist’s Surrealism series, the paintings Andromeda and Pasărea de foc (Firebird) reinterpret two well-known myths, questioning how mythology can be told from a woman’s perspective.
Sabina resides in New York City. Her works have been shown at the Gallery of the Art Students League of New York and purchased by private collectors in the US and Romania.

pastel drawings

I am a Brazilian artist who understands that vision is a psychological experience of pleasure, culturally determined and socially legitimated. At the time I created this series of drawings, I was writing a monograph about the psychological and cultural relationship between beauty and women at the age of menopause, published in Brazil in 2002. “Hands of a Woman” is a series in which I explore a group of studies of a live female model to reflect on the relationship between the female body and the viewer. I focused on the model’s hands in particular in opposition to the exploitation of the female body that permeates the tradition of art history.

Artist Statement
A self-taught artist, I live by the philosophy that the only two processes in life are growing and dying, and that as long as I am learning; I am holding the second stage at bay.
I love painting beautiful scenes that beg to be visited, and simple, ordinary people that evoke deep emotional responses or provoke thought from the viewer. When I paint, I feel as if I am in complete control of my world; a world filled with honesty and compassion. I try to make every canvass express the power of this energy.
“Nobody Hears My Screams” expresses the sometimes helplessness of women who grow old alone. Yes, women have more opportunities as their old age is extended via modern medicine, but there are also moments when we intensely feel our aloneness and vulnerabilities.

Exercise in Self-Examination Part I (leaning forward)
Karen Reilly
Columbia Heights, MN
Ink on paper
8 1/2" x 11"
$150
My intention with this project was to stretch my artistic abilities. Previously, I had drawn figures, but they were always clothed. I forced myself to look at my body, which is frowned upon in some circles, and represent it as is regardless if anyone saw my work or not. This gave me some freedom in that I was the main judge of its quality and content. I am satisfied with the work as an insight into the privacy of my bathroom.

Susanna and the Dirty F--king Old Men
Anthony Santella
Teaneck, NJ
Mixed media assemblage
16" x 20"
$500
In Susanna I am sending up the genre of picture that perhaps most explicitly embodies the male gaze in art. The biblical tale has always provided an excuse to depict a nude, and a scene of voyeurism and molestation. The elders execution, never gets painted. Here a modern setting and cardboard cutout treatment strips the art historical dignity from the scene, leaving only an ugly farce.

The Duet
Nicholas Schleif
Marshall, MN
Charcoal, conte, human ashes, and semen on paper
27”x62.5”
$3750
This piece is entitled The Duet, and that is exactly what I am portraying in this image. In addition to comparing the similarities between the musical instrument and human form, I am also illustrating the similarities between sexual performance and artistic performance.
In some of my other work I have compared the idea of playing a solo to masturbation; however, in this piece I am comparing a duet to sexual intercourse. The idea of sharing ideas and playing music together in the pursuit of creating a song or album seems, to me, to be similar to the idea of sharing fluids and making love together in the pursuit of creating a baby or family.
However, we also see a glaring a contradiction to that idea. The microphone (penis) continues through the body and exits out of the sound hole of the guitar, almost as if it is impaling her. Essentially, I am communicating the idea that just as every song has it's end, every sexual encounter does as well. And I believe that in today's society, that's all a relationship is--one long sexual encounter. This illustrates the double-nature of sexuality--reproduction and recreation.
However, even though the microphone itself is impaling her, it is also positioned in such a way that her voice is the dominant one. She is positioned on top, illustrating her, obviously, as the dominant partner. Other than portions of the legs, all we see of the male is his erection. This, again, is a reference to pornography. Many argue that pornography objectifies women. I do agree with this; however, I believe that it objectifies men more-so. In pornography, the female is always empowered, always in control, while the male is nothing but a faceless cock for her to have her way with.

Hello, Cello
Nicholas Schleif
Marshall, MN
Charcoal, conte, and human ashes on paper
42.5”x55.5”
$3500
This piece compares the female form and the cello. Again I chose to combine the two to reference my surrealist influence, and to re-inforce the argument that the instrument becomes part of the musician. To show the stability and strength of the instrument, I used the traditional triangular composition popular during the High Renaissance with artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Raphael.
She is squatting down low in the image to echo the position one is in when playing the instrument. The stand of the cello seems to be penetrating her vagina. This again references conception/procreation/sexual indulgence. The body and neck of the cello echoes the shape and valuptuousness of the female form. The bow seems to be replacing her finger, illustrating the idea that she is playing herself. This alludes to the idea of masturbation, which I will argue is what a lot of musicians are doing when they are performing--stroking their own egos for pleasure and gratification.
I chose a highly sexual overtone for this piece because of the instrument itself. The low, soothing, rythmic music a cello produces strikes up very passionate, erotic feelings in me, and this piece is meant to illustrate that idea.

Charcoal, conte, and human ashes on paper
33”x48”
$2375
This is not only the first female form, but the first form all together I did in the style/media. I believe I referenced women in Playboy magazines for this piece, which has ties to my use of porno actors and acresses in my newer work. After doing this piece, I noticed the perspectives I used and how I positioned them gave the form a nervous, sort of "dear in headlights" sort of feeling--thus the title.

How To Fuck Like A Pornstar (Jenna Jameson)
Nicholas Schleif
Marshall, MN
678 condoms on canvas
54”x68”
$5475
This is the second portrait I've done in a series of many. In doing the portrait, I make sure the medium I use directly relates to the subjects life. This particular portrait is of the pornstar Jenna Jameson. She is probably the best known pornstar next to Ron Jeremy (I will be doing one of him soon), and I chose to make the portrait out of 720 condoms adhered to a canvas. I feel the condoms fit for many reasons. The most obvious is the reference to sex of course, but there is also a more hidden philosophy to them....
Sex is the means by which humans reproduce, so you might say that the point of sex is reproduction. (I would agree, but I would also argue that it is not the ONLY point...but rather one of many.) A condom is specifically designed to prevent pregnancy (and STDs), and in using them, I feel it expresses how pornography using sex for entertainment, rather than reproduction. Although most of the condoms in this piece are straight out of the wrapper, I did use several of them before applying them to the piece.
I had three major influences when doing this piece. Obviously chuck close is a major influence; but I also tried to arrange the condoms in such a way that the viewer is reminded of Vincent Van Gogh's energetic, flowing brush strokes. I also referenced Andy Warhol's portraits of Marilyn Monroe when doing this piece. I used minimal shading in the piece, and flattened the image a great deal in order to remove the individual from the image of Jenna Jameson's face, stripping her of her identity, and leaving her her image to portray only her facade--the sexual object she becomes in her films.

With an awareness of the history of representational and art and of feminist tradition, I work to create art which undermines the harm done by representations of a gendered ideal.
The small scale of the ceramic pieces draws the viewer in and encourages active, thoughtful participation. The imagery draws from natural elements – seedpods, crustaceans, flowers, muscle, veins. I hand form the sculptures, abstracting and combining such elements, reconfiguring representation of the body.
The juxtaposition of inner and outer, of dry and wet, colorless and vivid, depicts a multiplicity of existence. These dualities require the viewer to break beyond the outer shell, to explore the inner being as well as the outer, to move beyond the border and to discover the possibility of the unknown.

In this piece the artist attempts to imitate the sultry, seductive, and “womanly” ways of a dancer from the French film, “Les Bonnes Femmes,” (Claude Chabrol, 1960). Throughout the duration of the piece her attempts, in their futility, become both amusing and distressing.

Wood Cut Print, Two color print, 2008
$95 framed - Edition of 10
In this series I was concerned with the way an image looks with different background and foreground colors. I chose this print to work with because I liked the graphic potential of the black and white original print. For me this series is about contrasts, in both color, tone, and subject matter treatment. Women are generally treated as soft yet I have used the wood cut print with harsh craving to portray her in a bold pose. Her skin tone is left as the white of the paper for maximum contrast.
In art school we are trained to study the model, be it a woman, man, or paper bag with a disinterested gaze to capture the visual information and put it on paper. In the real world it is almost impossible to be disinterested. Michele stands arms akimbo and stares at us from the print with confidence. I stare back and change the color.

I stare back and change the color.

laserprint/postage stamp
8.5" x 11"
$1200
This piece is part of an ongoing project involving the
creating, printing and mailing of fake postage stamps
from various countries throughout the world. I have
been pursuing this project for nearly fifteen years
and have incurred the wrath of the United States
Postal Inspectors, who have threatened me with charges
amounting to three federal felonies
for each envelope. I presently employ 'cut-outs',
associates who receive most of my letters and return
them to me.

"Girls struggled with mixed messages. [..] Be honest, but don't hurt
anyone's feelings. Be independent, but be nice. Be smart, but not so
smart that you threaten boys." –Mary Pipher, Reviving Ophelia
I am interested in examining the position of women in our current
society and my own connections to femininity through the use of color,
pattern, and craft. I borrow vintage images from the early 20th
century because they are more accessible than contemporary images.
The trio of figures is appropriated from the 1920s St Paul fashion
catalog "The Farmer's Wife". While showcasing clothes to be purchased
by women, the catalog repeatedly portrays women in derogatory poses
including gossip circles. The background text reinforces this
stereotype and concludes in my meager attempt to silence it. The work
stands as evidence that women are also guilty in perpetuating the
history of women as object to be consumed by the viewer.

oil paint on wood panel
10" x 12"
$500
My paintings celebrate femininity and style. I explore fashion and the erotic appeal of women’s clothing. Clothing is a form of nonverbal communication that reveals characteristics about the kind of people we are. The way we dress is a visual ‘guide’ to express attributes about us such as our personality, culture, gender, and/or sexual preference. Clothing in general is sexual. It has a close association with the physical body and an artificial object. It is the job of clothing to perform many roles such as protection, modesty and attraction, however it is used quite often to attract attention to the body.
I encourage my viewers to simply enjoy a pleasurable aesthetic experience of looking at a work of art through elements of color and form.

The women I depict are not ideal, but beautiful; they are confident, curvaceous, exposed, and vulnerable, yet aware. I long to exhibit such confidence of self; I seek the originating root of confidence’s creation by observing its vessels. I believe it can be perceived and documented through expression and abstraction; an individual’s psychological and emotional presence is unavoidable. The result of my personal artistic expression lies in my love for human individuality.

Untitled
from the series "Body Language"
Jan Wurm
Berkley, CA
11" x 14"
mixed media on paper
2007
$ 500
This work pursues an interest in the gesture, body language, and social implications of the interactions of people. Beyond portraiture, these artworks have sought to distill imagery to an abstract system which might convey elements of emotion, tension, and resolution.
The intimacy of a couple is layed before the viewer as we partake of the male gaze addressing the woman with shirt open to the waist. And then, there is a switch to regard the man as object of attention when the woman stands behind and he is open to examination and visual consumption. The poolside manner presents a world of unclothed bodies engaged yet isolated. Whatever combination of materials, there is a constant push toward an image of the intensity of being.
